Shopify checkout or payment method not working

A checkout troubleshooting checklist for unavailable payment methods, stores unable to accept payments, shipping-step blocks, test-mode mistakes, regional eligibility, holds, and third-party gateway configuration.

Do not want to work through every Shopify check yourself? Send the current URL, screenshots, and timeline. We can run the buyer-controlled diagnosis and return a fixed-scope checkout test and payment-boundary diagnosis.

Preserve the failing checkout

Record the cart, address, market, currency, customer state, payment method, exact message, and time. Changing the cart or location between attempts can hide the rule that makes a method unavailable.

  • Use a non-production test product where possible.
  • Record abandoned checkout and order timeline evidence.
  • Never capture full card data in screenshots.

Confirm the buyer can reach payment

A checkout that has no valid shipping rate, unavailable inventory, or an invalid market cannot progress to payment. Diagnose the checkout stages in order instead of starting with gateway credentials.

  • Confirm market and product availability.
  • Verify the address receives a shipping or pickup option.
  • Check primary payment provider and account status.

Test the provider boundary

Shopify settings, account holds, third-party credentials, test mode, provider eligibility, and external outages can produce similar storefront symptoms. The handoff should show which boundary failed.

  • Check status and admin banners.
  • Use supported test methods only.
  • Send the provider a timestamped attempt and configuration state, not customer secrets.
Technical troubleshooting checklist

Work through the evidence in a controlled order.

Each check defines what a healthy result looks like, what to do when it fails, and what evidence to preserve before the next change.

01

Checkout path checks

Validate the cart, market, inventory, and shipping path before the gateway.

  1. Create one controlled cart with a published, available product and record market and currency.
    Healthy result
The product is purchasable in the target market and the checkout currency is expected.
    If it fails
Fix product publication, inventory, or market availability first.
    Save as evidence
Product URL, variant, quantity, market, currency, and timestamp.
  2. Enter a representative customer address and verify a valid shipping or pickup rate appears.
    Healthy result
The buyer can proceed from delivery to payment with an expected rate.
    If it fails
Trace shipping zone, profile, package, product, location, and carrier/app conditions.
    Save as evidence
Redacted address region, cart, rates shown, and missing-rate message.
  3. Repeat in incognito and on mobile without accelerated checkout.
    Healthy result
The normal checkout path and wallet path behave consistently or the affected path is isolated.
    If it fails
Focus on customer session, wallet eligibility, or device-specific state only after a clean comparison.
    Save as evidence
    Device/browser/wallet matrix.
  4. Inspect abandoned checkout or order timeline details for the exact attempt.
    Healthy result
The timeline identifies the payment or checkout response without unrelated attempts.
    If it fails
Match by timestamp, cart, and customer; obtain gateway logs if the timeline is generic.
    Save as evidence
Redacted timeline entry and attempt timestamp.
02

Payment setup checks

Confirm the store has an eligible, active provider and that the selected method fits the order context.

  1. Verify an active primary payment provider is configured.
    Healthy result
Credit/debit payments have an active primary provider and additional methods are not being mistaken for a replacement.
    If it fails
Complete provider activation or configure an eligible third-party primary gateway.
    Save as evidence
Payments settings status with sensitive IDs redacted.
  2. Check Shopify Payments holds, verification banners, owner email, and store-country eligibility.
    Healthy result
No unresolved account action blocks processing and the method is available in the store region.
    If it fails
Complete the requested verification or use the documented eligible provider path.
    Save as evidence
Admin banner, account status, country, and dated owner-email reference.
  3. For a third-party gateway, verify credentials, onboarding steps, live/test mode, currency, and provider account status.
    Healthy result
The gateway is connected in live mode with compatible order currency and account approval.
    If it fails
Reconnect or correct provider-side settings, then repeat the same controlled checkout.
    Save as evidence
Connection status, mode, supported currency, test result, and provider reference.
  4. Check Shopify status and preserve a provider-ready failure packet.
    Healthy result
No active outage explains the issue, or the attempt is linked to the published incident.
    If it fails
Escalate with exact time, store, gateway, cart, currency, error, and timeline evidence.
    Save as evidence
Status screenshot, attempt record, and support case ID.
Frequently asked questions

Questions that change the next step.

Why does checkout say the store cannot accept payments?

Shopify says this commonly means the store does not have an active primary payment provider. Account holds or incomplete provider activation can also block processing.

Can missing shipping rates look like a payment problem?

Yes. If no shipping rate is available, the customer cannot reach the payment step. Diagnose checkout in order: cart, market, inventory, delivery, then payment.

What should be included in a safe screenshot?

Include the visible error, time, cart, region, currency, and relevant admin status. Never include full card numbers, security codes, bank details, or unredacted identity documents.

What could happen next

A first pass can remain a compact artifact, or expand into a new clearly priced scope with long-term support when the work needs upkeep, rollout help, or follow-up checks.

  • Shipping profile or market correction
  • Gateway reconnection and controlled test
  • Provider-ready escalation and post-fix checkout QA
